Types of Volunteer Service

Types of Volunteer Service

Event and Special Projects Support
From time to time, Shangri-La needs volunteers to help at events and with special projects. These volunteer opportunities are usually only a few hours long.

Service-To-Go
Service-To-Go is a form of volunteer service where we provide you with the materials and instructions to complete a service project at your location. These projects are ideal for groups.

Group Service:
Many of our ‘Event and Special Project’ volunteer opportunities and ‘Service-To-Go’ volunteer opportunities can accommodate small groups (5-15 people). If your group is interested in serving with Shangri-La, please contact us to see what opportunities might be available to you.

Practicum and Internships
As a diverse human services organization, Shangri-La can provide practicum and internship opportunities that include working directly with individuals in many of our programs. We can also provide experiences in our administrative departments.

Group Service Opportunities

If your community organization, faith community, business, club or school group is looking for ways to engage in service, we can help.

Events and Special Projects
Contact us to see if we can engage your group at one of our upcoming events or special project volunteer opportunities.

Service-To-Go Projects
Let us bring volunteer service to you. Past projects include helping with newsletter production, making decorations for upcoming events, or preparing outreach materials. ‘Service-To-Go’ projects are available based on current need and our ability to keep your group busy.

Host a Care Package Donation Drive
Shangri-La's Care Package Project provide basic personal care items and household essentials to families with disadvantages and individuals with disabilities who are on a path to independent living. Host a donation drive to help us keep our cabinets stocked.

Nothing listed above meet your needs? Give us a call or send us an email. We’d love to brainstorm the perfect service project for your group.

To maximize the value of your group service, our skilled Community Engagement Coordinator can facilitate ice breakers, team-building, and reflection activities during service project.

"I love working with people, and this opportunity is allowing me to practice my skills and find my confidence as a professional people-person."

Internship and Practicum Opportunities

Internship and Practicum Opportunities

Shangri-La can provide valuable learning experiences in a variety of fields.

General Requirements

All practicum and interns must be at least 18 years of age. All internship and practicum students are required to complete an application, interview, and criminal history check, work within the parameters of their position description, develop learning objectives, participate in a mid-term and final evaluation, and complete a learning objectives presentation at the end of the term.

Criminal History Check

Per Oregon Revised Statues, Shangri-La requires that all practicum and interns complete a criminal history check and receive approval status before starting service.

See a list of disqualifying crimes.

Drug and Alcohol Policy + Testing

Shangri-La has a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy. Under this policy, Shangri-La receives the right to test in the case of probable cause/reasonable suspicion and post-accident. Shangri-La also receives the right to random test. Illegal drugs include any substance listed under Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act and any substance listed under Schedule II-V in which the drug is not being used in accordance with law or prescription.

How To Apply

To apply for a practicum or internship at Shangri-La, email your resume and cover letter to: volunteer@shangrila-or.org at least 6-10 weeks prior to your desired start date

After your resume and cover letter are reviewed, a member of the Shangri-La team will contact you to schedule an initial screening phone call.

Becoming a Shangri-La Volunteer

Becoming a Shangri-La Volunteer

Application & Background Check Process
Some Shangri-La volunteer opportunities (primarily internship and practicum placements) per Oregon Revised Statutes require an application, criminal history check, and orientation.

Please note that the criminal history check process can take up to six weeks to finish. As required by the position, all offers of volunteer status are contingent upon the approval of the criminal history check.

Furthermore, Shangri-La is a drug-free workplace. Some volunteer opportunities may require the volunteer to complete testing to determine if illegal drugs are present in the body.

Age Restrictions
Internship and practicum volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. 'Event and Special Projects’ volunteer opportunities typically require a volunteer to be at least 15 years of age to volunteer independently. Volunteers 15 years of age and under (who can successfully perform the duties of the volunteer opportunity) can typically volunteer with a parent or guardian.

See individual volunteer opportunity descriptions for specific age requirements.
