Shangri-La is an authorized Rent Well Program provider.
What is Rent Well?
Rent Well is a 15-hour tenant education program that helps empower Oregon and Washington residents with the knowledge and skills to navigate renting successfully. The lessons cover budgeting, the application process, communication skills, tenant rights, landlord expectations, unit maintenance, moving tips, and much more.​

Who can enroll in the Rent Well program?
To be eligible for the Rent Well program, you must meet BOTH of the following criteria.
1. Income Limit
Monthly income amount is at or less than 60% area median income
​In Oregon the 60% area median income limits for 2024 are:

1-Person household: $33,427 annual gross income or $2,785.58 monthly gross income

2-Person household: $43,712 annual gross income or $3,642.67 month gross income
-
3-Person household: $53,997 annual gross income or $4,499.75 monthly gross income
-
4-Person household: $64,282 annual gross income or $5,356.83 monthly gross income
2. Housing Barrier
You have experienced at least one of the the following barrier(s) to housing:

I am under the age of 25 and have no prior rental history.

I have a large gap in my rental history.
-
I owe a previous landlord money.
-
I have bad landlord references.
-
I believe I have been denied housing due to my race, ethnicity, or spoken language.

I believe I have been denied housing due to my gender identity or sexual orientation.
-
I am between 16 and 27 and have been under the juvenile court’s jurisdiction within the past 10 years.
-
I have an eviction on my record
-
I have a criminal history that makes finding a place to live hard
-
I have no/low/poor/bad credit.
-
You are paying more than 1/3 of your monthly income towards rent/mortgage.
-
You are being asked to leave your current residence and lack the resources to obtain other long-term housing.
-
You will have Section 8 or rental assistance when you look for your new place.

You are on a Housing Authority waitlist(s).
What are my commitments as a Rent Well Program participant?

Complete the 'Student Information and Self-Certification' form.

After eligibility is confirmed, enroll in a Rent Well course at Shangri-La.

Attend ALL classes.

The course is broken into four, 4-hour sessions held over a four-week period. Shangri-La's classes are Mondays from 9:45 am to 2:00 p.m. ​

Bring $16 to the first class to pay for your course book.​

Classes are held at Shangri-La's Salem Office located at 4080 Reed Road SE, Suite #150 in Salem. Free parking is available in Shangri-La's parking lot. Cherriots bus stop #773 (Fairview Industrial @ Reed) is about a 3-5 minute walk from Shangri-La.
